The problem
You turn the key (or push the button) and get a slow crank, a single click, or nothing at all. Ontario winters make weak batteries show themselves first — especially after a cold night.
What it usually means
| What you hear / see | Often points to |
|---|---|
| Slow crank, lights dim | Battery struggling, or poor connections |
| One solid click | High current path (battery, cables, starter) |
| Clicks rapidly | Often battery too low to hold the starter in |
| Lights bright, no crank | Could be starter, neutral safety, ignition — not always the battery |
| Radio / lights dead | Battery or main fuse / disconnect |
Honest: online guides cannot diagnose *your* car. We can help you sort the next check at the counter.
What to check before you buy (safe DIY)
- Are the battery terminals clean and tight? White/green crust is enough to kill a start.
- Did anything stay on overnight? Lights, charger, cabin light.
- How old is the battery? Many passenger batteries struggle past 4–6 winters in Eastern Ontario.
- Jump-start etiquette: positive to positive, ground the booster to bare metal on the dead car — not randomly on plastic. If you're unsure, don't force it.
- After a jump: if it dies again the same day, you may need a charge test or alternator check — not just a new battery.
When to come to the counter
Bring:
- Year / make / model (and engine if you know it — e.g. 2.0L vs 3.5L)
- What happens on the key (slow crank / click / silence)
- Battery group size if you already pulled it (or photos of the top label)
- Whether you need AGM / start-stop (many newer cars)
We'll help match the right battery type and group for the vehicle — not the cheapest box that almost fits.
